The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. The Latin America and the Caribbean Office located in Panama City works closely with the 33 countries of the region - including 16 small island developing States, with a population of about 588 million people. The office works to serve the needs of the region and its activities are integrated into the work programs approved by the United Nations Environment Assembly of UNEP (UNEA).
Within the Latin America and the Caribbean Office, the Resource Efficiency Unit promotes and supports countries and stakeholders to design policies and initiatives to reduce the use of natural resources and its related negative impacts, supports countries in the transition to green economies and more sustainable patterns of consumption and production, which are important elements to achieve sustainable development. On the sustainable consumption side, UNEP has been providing technical assistance to the public and private stakeholders on the development of sustainable public procurement (SPP) policies and the use of ecolabelling in combination, to achieve maximum synergies and better deliver the common goal of stimulating the demand and supply of sustainable products. UNEP has also been supporting sustainable production practices in the private sector, paying special attention to Small and Medium Size Enterprises (SMEs), through activities that include Eco-innovation, resource efficiency and cleaner production, and Life Cycle Approaches. UNEP is implementing regional initiatives on “Inclusive Green Economy and Sustainable Finances” with the objective of providing capacity development and technical assistance to the public and private sectors on the development of inclusive green economy policies and sustainable finance products and practices, to achieve maximum synergies and better deliver the common goal of sustainable development.
Under the direct supervision of the Regional Coordinator of the Resource Efficiency Sub-programme, in the Latin America and the Caribbean Office, the intern(s) will work within the team and be highly involved in day-to-day activities of UNEP’s Environment′s Resource Efficiency Unit.
One intern is sought for a six-month internship period. The Internship is UNPAID and full-time. Interns work five days per week (40 hours).
In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, applicants may be requested to undertake the internship remotely in view of constraints regarding visa issuance, international travel and access to UN premises. Applicants must be willing and prepared to undertake the internship remotely for a part or the entirety of the internship. The work hours during the internship shall be determined based on individual discussion between the intern and the supervisor(s) taking into consideration the minimum requirements of the Organization and the time difference between the hosting office and the location of the intern.
Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual’s background, the intern’s assigned office as well as the internship period.
Under the direct supervision of the Resource Efficiency Sub-programme, in the Latin America and the Caribbean Office, the intern will be supporting the following workstreams and projects:
-Sustainable Public Procurement
-Consumer Information and Sustainable Lifestyles
-Partnership for Action on Green Economy (PAGE)
More specifically, the job will entail the following tasks:
-Support with the follow-up and implementation of the above mentioned workstreams and projects.
-Support with online platforms used by the Resources Efficiency team, including: upload all the relevant information in the platform (resources and profiles submitted by the countries, abstracts of all the collected resources, webpages contempt, etc.); maintain the Platform and website ongoing and updated in terms of information and activities (e.g. newsletters, agendas in the region, organization of periodical webinars and south-south cooperation bilateral exchanges).
-Support the preparation of agendas, presentations, briefings, minutes and communication material.
-Assist with the organization of meetings, workshops, seminars, webinars, and other similar activities, supporting the preparation of agendas, co-drafting background materials, presentation, meetings minutes and reports.
-Review literature and prepare summaries with main findings on resource efficiency, green economy, sustainable consumption and production, consumer information and sustainable lifestyles.
The candidate should have strong communication skills, and a sound knowledge of the nexus of environmental, social, and economic issues.

Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:
a.Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
b.Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent);
c.Have graduated with a university degree
Be computer literate in standard software applications.
Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter;
Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
Final year undergraduate or master’s degree student in environmental policy, climate change, natural resource management, development, energy efficiency and/or related field of studies preferred.
No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.
Excellent writing and communication skills in English and Spanish are required. Working knowledge of other UN official languages is desirable
