Org. Setting and Reporting

The Outreach Division builds support for the United Nations (UN) by fostering dialogue with global constituencies such as civil society, the entertainment industry, media, academia, educators, students, and libraries. The priorities of the division are focused on the SDGs, Decade of Action.The Director of the Outreach Division at the UN headquarters in New York is at the same time the UN Commissioner-General (UN CG) for the next World Expo, referred to as Expo 2020, which will now take place from October 1, 2021 to March 31, 2022. The UN will also engage at the Expo in over 10 UN International Days, and have its own events, activations, and exhibits managed by the Office of the Director of Outreach, in New York. Senior officials of the various UN agencies will attend the Expo, including the UN Secretary-General, UN Deputy Secretary-General, and various Executive Directors of the UN entities. The incumbent will be based in New York at the Director’s Office of the Outreach Division, and will report to the Director.


Responsibilities

-Be a key member in the day-to-day work at the Director’s Office of the Outreach Division

-Support the Director on the drafting of concept notes, background information and e-mail correspondence

-Research and compile materials for projects and exhibitions coordinated by the Director’s Office and liaise with relevant colleagues

-Be a focal point for Expo programming and support the Director in his role as UN CG in the lead up to the UN presence at Expo and during event time.

-Maintain and update the Expo files, calendar of events, activations, programming and International Days with relevant information, contacts and work programme.

-Liaise with the Resident Coordinator’s Office and Deputy Commissioner- General of the UN at Expo, based in the UAE, as required.

-Produce social media content for the UN on the Expo and UN activities therein, and of relevance to the UN entity mandates

-Identify exhibits and special events during the Expo of interest to UN and communicate these potential opportunities to the Director for consideration.

-Support the planning and logistics of Expo visits for UN delegations

-Contribute to the drafting of strategies to help direct and promote digital engagement for various UN events and activities

-Contribute to the development of a range of communication products on the UN’s engagement at the Expo.

-Contribute to the planning of historical documentation of the UN’s engagement during Expo2020

-Support with other coordinating tasks at the Director’s Office; other duties as assigned by the Director.

Education

To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met:


Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:

(a) be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme in journalism, communication, media studies, filmmaking, international relations, social sciences (including history, politics, sociology, philosophy, anthropology, etc), economics, law, or a related field (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent); or

(b) be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher), in which case at least one of the prior first degree programme and the graduate programme must be in one of the subjects specified above;

(c) have graduated with a university degree (as defined above).


Applicants must also:

- Be computer literate in standard software applications;

- Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter;

- Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.


Work Experience

Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is related to the type of internship that you are applying to is required.


Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of other United Nations official languages is desirable.
