Org. Setting and Reporting
The United Nations Staff Union in New York (UNSU) is seeking highly motivated individuals who wish to gain professional experience in labor relations, labor organizing and workplace conflict resolution within an international organization in order to supplement their studies. The Intern will report to the President and the Vice Presidents of UNSU.
- The duration of the internship is between 2 months to a maximum of 6 months depending on particular needs of the project.
- Internships are unpaid. Travel costs, travel arrangements (including visas), and living accommodations are the responsibility of the intern.
- Internship positions are full-time and interns work up to five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a relevant staff member, based upon their assignment
Under direct supervision of the Staff Union President and Vice Presidents, the intern might assist with some or all of the following tasks:
- Providing assistance to the Staff Union Leadership and Executive Board in implementing Staff Union programs and initiatives
- Maintaining Staff Union websites and social media feeds
- Supporting the organization of meetings, events and campaigns
- Researching in various fields, (e.g., the administration of justice, comparative studies of international organizations)
- Evaluating of surveys (processing statistical data)
- Assisting with graphic design and messaging
- Receiving and responding to constituent phone calls, messages, emails and walk-ins
Communication: Speaks and writes clearly and effectively; listens to others, correctly interprets messages from others and responds appropriately; asks questions to clarify; and exhibits interest in having two-way communication; tailors language, tone, style and format to match the audience; demonstrates openness in sharing information and keeping people informed;
Teamwork: Works collaboratively with colleagues to achieve organizational goals; solicits input by genuinely valuing others' ideas and expertise; is willing to learn from others; places team agenda before personal agenda; supports and acts in accordance with final group decision, even when such decisions may not entirely reflect own position; shares credit for team accomplishments and accepts joint responsibility for team shortcomings
Technological Awareness: Keeps abreast of available technology; understands applicability and limitations of technology to the work of the office; actively seeks to apply technology to appropriate tasks; shows willingness to learn new technology.
To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met:
1) At the time of the application
a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher) in the humanities, public administration, political sciences or related area;
b) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent) in the humanities, public administration, political sciences or related area.
2) Be computer literate in standard software applications;
3) Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and
4) Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the project. However, applicants are encouraged to list all relevant work experiences in their personal history profile.
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations. For the position advertised, fluency in English is required, knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage.

Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations. Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions. For internships in the United States of America, interns who are not United States citizens, permanent residents or not currently in the United States on a non-immigrant visa status will be required to obtain a G-4 visa. If already in the United States of America on another non-immigrant visa status other than G-4, interns will be responsible for ensuring that they have a valid visa, and if required, employment authorization, allowing them to undertake the internship.
In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, applicants may be requested to undertake the internship remotely in view of constraints regarding visa issuance, international travel and access to UN premises. United Nations Considerations
According to article 101, paragraph 3, of the Charter of the United Nations, the paramount consideration in the employment of the staff is the necessity of securing the highest standards of efficiency, competence, and integrity. Candidates will not be considered for employment with the United Nations if they have committed violations of international human rights law, violations of international humanitarian law, sexual exploitation, sexual abuse, or sexual harassment, or if there are reasonable grounds to believe that they have been involved in the commission of any of these acts. The term “sexual harassment” means any unwelcome conduct of a sexual nature that might reasonably be expected or be perceived to cause offence or humiliation, when such conduct interferes with work, is made a condition of employment or creates an intimidating, hostile or offensive work environment, and when the gravity of the conduct warrants the termination of the perpetrator’s working relationship. Candidates who have committed crimes other than minor traffic offences may not be considered for employment.

By accepting an offer of appointment, United Nations staff members are subject to the authority of the Secretary-General and assignment by him or her to any activities or offices of the United Nations in accordance with staff regulation 1.2 (c). In this context, all internationally recruited staff members shall be required to move periodically to discharge new functions within or across duty stations under conditions established by the Secretary-General.
