Org. Setting and Reporting   

 

The internship in the Digital Support Unit, Digital & Promotion Branch of News and Media Division (NMD), Department of Global Communications, is for a minimum of three (3) months, with an opportunity for extension to a maximum of six (6) months, depending on the needs of the department and availability of the intern. The Digital Support Unit is responsible for the design, development, maintenance and overall support of several United Nations public websites managed by DGC.

 

 

 

The internship is unpaid and full-time.

 

 

 

Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.

 

Responsibilities   

 

The intern will work in a team-oriented environment to support the functions of the Unit. He/She will participate in various web-based projects including the development of new websites and the archiving of existing ones as required, and will be responsible for one or more of the following duties:

 

 

 

- Conducting research on the web, compiling and analyzing data on thematic issues and web technologies, and adapting content for the web.

 

 

 

- Assisting with technical and content related maintenance of existing web sites in HTML, CSS or on the WordPress and/or Drupal platforms.

 

 

 

- Drafting, formatting, editing and posting web site content, including graphics, photos and videos as required.

 

 

 

- Editing images and videos for use on the web.

 

 

 

- Assisting with the flattening and archiving of CMS based websites.

 

 

 

- Using multimedia communications and IT/web-related tools such as Adobe Creative Suite, web development programming and scripting languages, such as PHP, HTML5, CSS3, digital editing tools and social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Weibo.

Education   

 

To qualify for an internship with the United Nations New York Headquarters Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met:

 

 

 

1. Applicants must:

 

 

 

(a) be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or

 

(b) be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent); or

 

(c) have graduated with a university degree (as defined in (a) or (b) above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one year period of graduation.

 

 

 

2. Be computer literate in standard word processing and spreadsheets software applications such as Microsoft Word and Excel or similar.

 

 

 

Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and

 

 

 

Have a demonstrated ability to interact successfully with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

 

Work Experience   

 

Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is desirable.

 

Languages   

 

English or French are the working languages of the United Nations. For the internship advertised, fluency in English is required and knowledge of another official language of the United Nations (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian and Spanish) is desirable.
