 Org. Setting and Reporting   

 

 

 

The internship is with the Human Security Unit. For more information and case-studies on the Human Security Approach, please consult: http://www.un.org/humansecurity/ The internship with the Human Security Unit, located in New York, is for a duration of three months. Depending on the needs of the unit and upon satisfactory performance of the intern, there is a possibility for extension for another three months. The total duration of the entire internship period is six months at maximum. Under no circumstances will there be extension beyond six months. The internship is UNPAID and full time. Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the unit to which they are assigned.

 

Responsibilities   

 

 The intern will assist the Human Security Unit in undertaking research and developing strategies for the short, medium and long-term outreach and resource mobilization for the UN Trust Fund for Human Security in line with the Unit's strategic objectives and workplan. This includes the following:

 

- Provide support in research and analysis for the elaboration, planning and implementation of resource mobilization activities

 

(i) Research potential sources of funding throughout the range of national, international, governmental, non-governmental and private sector organizations, and compile information in a user-friendly format for analysis.

 

(ii) Undertake in-depth research and analysis on target donors, utilizing multiple sources of information including social media accounts.

 

(iii) Draft assessment documents for the Resource Mobilization Officer (RMO) and Chief on donors' interests as well as new avenues for fundraising.

 

(iv) Identify opportunities to expand strategic partnerships.

 

(v) Contribute to the preparations of donor meetings and donor-related travel by the RMO and Chief, including drafting background notes and talking points.

 

Support in the development of a new donor database and information management system to track relevant analysis, background documents and communications; maintain up-to-date list of contact information

 

- Contribute to the preparation of communications materials and donor documents

 

(i) Provide inputs for the donor package and donor-specific materials.

 

(ii) Draft social media posts to raise visibility and engage with potential and existing partners.

 

(iii) Undertake media analysis, including compiling headlines from Member States and prospective donors

 

Perform other work related duties as required.

Education   

  

To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, applicants must meet one of the following requirements:

 

a) be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);

 

b) be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent); or

 

c) have graduated with a university degree (as defined above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one year of graduation.

Work Experience   

 

 Applicants:

 

- are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme;

 

* be computer literate in all standard software applications;

 

- have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal

 

commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and

 

- have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural

 

backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand;

 

- be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

 

Languages   

  

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is desirable. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.

 

Assessment
