Task Title: INTERN-SCOP12-Establishment of accurate penalty factors for ITER first wall panel heat loading
Domain: Science & Operation

Department: Science,Controls & Operation
Division: Science

Section: Experiments and Plasma Operation
Duration (in months): 6 months
Location:
France, 13067 St Paul Lez Durance Cedex
Description of tasks:

The ITER plasma-facing components (PFC) are profiled (shaped) in such a way as to shadow any edges which might be visible to plasma streaming along magnetic field lines which, in a tokamak, impact the walls with very oblique angles.  These "leading edges" result from assembly and manufacturing tolerances. In addition to "global" shaping, the PFCs also have finer scale surface features due to the use of small "tiles" or monoblocks. This leads to a power loading different than on a perfect analytic surface. The goal of the internship is to assess this "facetting penalty" for a selection of the ITER PFCs.

Task 1: Develop familiarity with the SMITER field line tracing software which will be used to study the PFC heat flux patterns
Task 2: Import into SMITER full CAD models containing the detailed surface geometries and create meshes
Task 3: Perform heat flux calculations on selected PFCs for different plasma scenarios (magnetic equilibria) and investigate consequences of misaligned components

The ITER Organization offers internship opportunities to undergraduate and postgraduate students with the objective of providing these students with the opportunity to gain practical experience in their field of study, whilst collaborating in an international, scientific and multicultural environment.  Internships are offered for up to six months, extendable for up to one year (depending on the category).  To find out more about our internship program, please refer to our website (click here)

For any further questions, please contact internships@iter.org

Internship opportunities are limited to nationals from countries participating in the ITER Project (China, the European Union plus Switzerland, India, Japan, Korea, Russian Federation, and the United States).

Please also note that interns are not considered staff members and shall, therefore, not have the status of "Staff" as per the ITER Agreement and the Headquarters Agreement (see more information on these constitutive agreements in Legal Resources).  Neither the ITER Staff Regulations nor the privileges and immunities granted to ITER Organization staff are applicable to interns.  The ITER Organization salary, pension scheme, and social insurance coverage do also not apply.
