The United Nations Environment Programme (UN Environment) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. The Latin America and the Caribbean Office located in Panama City works closely with the 33 countries of the region - including 16 small island developing States, with a population of about 588 million people.
UN Environment through the environmental governance subprogramme, works with governments and the relevant institutions in the UN system, as well as with Multilateral Environmental Agreements (MEAs), to promote more coherent, effective, and efficient decision making and action on the environment.
The Environmental Governance subprogramme assists governments in enhancing global and regional environmental cooperation, developing and applying national and international environmental law, advancing national and regional implementation of environmental objectives, and bridging major groups and governments in policy development and implementation processes.
UN Environment has a long, successful history in overseeing and spearheading the progressive development and implementation of environmental law as well as in the promotion of and support for environmental governance at all levels. UN Environment also hosts several major multilateral environmental agreements and supports their contracting Parties in the implementation, compliance with and enforcement of these international treaties. Particularly, the Law Division leads the future evolution of the international environmental law agenda, promotes environmental rule of law across the UN system and assists national Governments in the development and implementation of environmental law. The Division facilitates synergies and policy coherence on environmental issues in the United Nations system. It promotes strong environmental governance and institutions at all levels.
The intern will work with UN Environment - Latin America and the Caribbean Office’s, Environmental Governance Unit, under the supervision of the Environmental Governance Regional Coordinator.
The internship is for 6 months.
The Internship is UNPAID and full-time.
Interns work five days per week (35-40 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.
Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual's background; the intern's assigned office as well as the internship period.
Under the supervision of the Environmental Governance Regional Coordinator. The position will be supporting the implementation of the Subprogramme on Environmental Governance in the field of environmental law in the Latin American and Caribbean region, through
* Assist the Latin American and Caribbean office in the implementation of national and regional activities to enhance the progressive development of effective laws and institutions to deal with pressing and emerging national and regional environmental challenges in the context of the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda.
* Assist in the outreach to countries to encourage nomination of national focal points for the Montevideo Programme on Environmental Law and provide support for the active engagement of designated national points in the application, monitoring and evaluation of the Montevideo Programme.
* Assist in the preparations and implementation of relevant meetings, forums, workshops, teleconferences, and video conferences as they relate to stakeholders’ engagement with focus on the upcoming meeting of the forum of Ministers of Environment and Latin American and the Caribbean and the regional engagement to UNEA4 in 2019.
More specifically, the job will entail the following tasks:

Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:
a. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent or higher)
b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent). The intern must be enrolled and be able to submit a university endorsement once selected for this position.
c. Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation
d. Be computer literate in standard software applications
e. Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter
f. Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views
Studies in Environmental Law, Studies in Environmental and Development Policy, or relevant Education or Capacity Development field.
Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme.
Excellent writing and communication skills in English and Spanish are required. Working knowledge of other UN official languages is an advantage.
